Nico Rosberg says he had no choice but to stay out an extra lap as rain hit Silverstone as he attempted to wrestle victory away from Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
Rosberg had dropped to fourth at the start and spent much of the race behind Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas, before passing both drivers as rain struck the circuit.
Rosberg closed in on Hamilton but the Briton dived into the pits for Intermediates, a decision which Rosberg initially felt was incorrect.
However, the rain intensified and Rosberg was forced to pit on the next lap, losing around eight seconds to Hamilton courtesy of the extra lap on dry tyres.
"I had these two Williams in front and I couldn’t get close," he said. "I was thankful the rain came and was able to attack and pass both Williams and close in on Lewis a lot.
"Lewis boxed and I was sure it was the wrong call as it was touch and go so I was quite happy... and it was the right call in the end, but anyway I had to take that chance as following Lewis in was a definite lose, I tried one lap longer and that’s the way it worked out."
