Nico Rosberg says he is aiming to apply as much pressure as possible to Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton as the pair prepare to fight for this year's world title in Abu Dhabi.

Rosberg beat Hamilton to pole position at the Yas Marina Circuit and has to claw back a 17 point deficit if he is to win his maiden championship.

"It’s a great day again today for sure, I’m thankful to the engineers, did a good job, happy with the set-up, it all worked out well, put a good lap together at the end, pleased with that," he said.

"It’s only one step, a small step, it’s about the world championship - not pole or anything.

"My mind-set is that I need to get the job done and continue on the form I had in Brazil. In the race for sure it will be a great battle between us, I hope for not just the win, but maybe something for Lewis or Valtteri [Bottas] - [I'm]  hoping he can be on special form and do the impossible tomorrow," Rosberg said, referring to needing Hamilton third or lower to win the title if he is victorious in the race.

"Pressure is one of the hopes I have, if Lewis has the pressure and makes the mistakes, a bit like today –if that’s what you’re saying and he made a mistake - and Brazil, that’s the opportunities I’m looking for, I’ll push all the time and keep the level high."
