Nico Rosberg believes that a spin from Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton cost him a shot at pole position during qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Hamilton spun under braking for turn two and caused a yellow flag period during the final moments of the session.

Rosberg, who was following Hamilton, had to back off due to yellow flags and abandon his lap.

The German will start the race from third on the grid, behind the Williams duo of Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas

"Of course I definitely didn’t expect the Williams to be ahead but they did do a good job, it didn’t come together [for me], Lewis spun in front of me on that last lap and I had to lift off, costing two tenths and it wouldn’t be possible to improve.

"That definitely cost me today, but third place is okay and a good place to start from tomorrow."

Hamilton, who had his first flying lap deleted after exceeding track limits, will start from ninth on the grid.

"I can’t really [explain], I spun, hit the brakes and lost the rears, not really sure," he told Sky Sports.
