Nico Rosberg says he had no warning over the brake problem which affected both Mercedes drivers during the closing stages of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Rosberg was under pressure from Kimi Raikkonen on the penultimate lap and when he braked for the first corner he went straight on, enabling Raikkonen to move into second place.

Rosberg managed to come home third, while team-mate Lewis Hamilton cruised around the final lap to secure victory.

"It’s very strange to have that two laps from the end, two laps, not even that but if it happens with a bit of warning I can drive to it but it happened in the middle of the braking zone and I went straight on," he said.

"Kimi was in my blind spot and I couldn’t see him so I couldn’t even defend. It was an exciting race and to lose it in the end was very disappointing for sure, but passing the red cars was a big enjoyment."

Rosberg's podium allowed him to move into second place in the championship, 27 points behind Hamilton.
