Nico Rosberg declared himself 'gutted' after sliding off the circuit as he attempted to wrestle back pole position from Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
Rosberg had led the way early in the session but Hamilton moved two-tenths clear of the German prior to their final flying laps.
Rosberg was matching Hamilton's time as he rounded Turn 8 but went marginally wide before sliding off track at the final corner, ending up in the gravel trap.
"I went on the AstroTurf at the second to last corner, maybe it was a little wet or I overdid it, I just lost it into the last corner," he said.
"I'm definitely gutted, Lewis was two tenths quicker [than the provisional best] and I was two tenths up at the point on my [first] lap so I knew I had to go for it and just over did it.
"This track is difficult and you really have to attack, [it's] easy to make mistakes."
Hamilton also spun on his final flying lap, a situation Rosberg said he was not aware of, but insisted it made no difference in the final outcome.
"I knew the gap to Lewis was two tenths, [there], so I was equal two corners from the end so it meant I had to take a little bit more risk and I over did it."
