The Mercedes pair were comfortably clear of their nearest rivals, with Williams's Felipe Massa in third position, 1.005s down on Rosberg.

Fernando Alonso set his time on Options during the early stages of the session and ended in fourth place as he and Ferrari attempt to save mileage on his engine.

Outgoing world champion Sebastian Vettel was fifth quickest for Red Bull, ahead of Jenson Button and Daniel Ricciardo.

Valtteri Bottas suffered a substantial lock-up on his way to the eighth best time, while Daniil Kvyat and Kimi Raikkonen completed the top 10.
