Nico Rosberg expressed his elation after snatching pole position from Lewis Hamilton during the final stages of qualifying for the British Grand Prix.

Rosberg had been playing second fiddle to the Brit in Q3 but a last gasp lap as the circuit dried elevated him to top spot, while Hamilton slipped to sixth.

"Definitely it was quite a crazy qualifying, weather changing all the time making it difficult," he said. "On the first lap with Softs it rained a lot in the last three corners, so I lost a lot of time there.

"I was sure that that was it, we sat in the box and we came to a conclusion that we might as well go out and have a look as there was a chance. It seemed like we should give it a go, I didn't believe it would happen.

"But the last sector made it. I knew that I'd lost four seconds on [my] previous lap, so even if I was slower on that lap I'd be quicker at the last three corners as it was a lot drier, but it worked out perfectly, it's awesome.

"Of course it's good for the championship that Lewis is down in sixth, although I expect him to come through quickly.

"Then we'll be racing each other again. It'll be a good battle again."
