Championship leader Nico Rosberg edged out Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton during the first practice session ahead of this weekend’s German Grand Prix.

Rosberg’s time of 1:19.131, set on the Prime compound tyres, was 0.065s quicker than Hamilton as the Mercedes duo locked out the top positions on a hot morning at Hockenheim.

Fernando Alonso was third for Ferrari, 0.292s down on pacesetter Rosberg.

Daniel Ricciardo set the fourth quickest time for Red Bull, ahead of McLaren’s Jenson Button and reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel.

Kevin Magnussen finished in seventh in the McLaren MP4-29, while Kimi Räikkönen, Daniil Kvyat and Adrian Sutil rounded out the top 10.

The session was the first opportunity for the field to sample their cars without FRIC, which is not being used from this race after the FIA made it clear that any team using the device could be challenged by a rival.

A couple of drivers appeared to be struggling with the handling of their cars, although there were no major incidents in a session which took place in hot conditions.

Felipe Massa was 11th for Williams, ahead of Jean-Éric Vergne and the Force India pairing of Nico Hülkenberg and Sergio Pérez.

Susie Wolff returned to the cockpit of the Williams FW36 and after problems struck her debut run at Silverstone, more woes hit as her car became stuck in gear on her installation lap. Williams was nonetheless able to correct the problem and she ended the session 15th fastest, having completed 22 error-free laps.

She finished just ahead of Giedo van der Garde, who replaced regular Sauber driver Esteban Gutiérrez and ended in 16th place.

Lotus endured a disappointing session as Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado managed just 17th and 18th, ahead of Kamui Kobayashi, Jules Bianchi, Marcus Ericsson and Max Chilton.
