Daniel Ricciardo joked that Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel won't be happy after the Australian beat the world champion for the second successive race.

Ricciardo and Vettel finished in fourth and fifth place in China, with the Australian passing his team-mate down into turn one midway through the race.

Ricciardo eventually pulled away from Vettel and narrowly missed out on beating Fernando Alonso to third place.

"I definitely would have got a sniff with another lap, but ifs and buts [don't count], we got close but not close enough," he told Sky Sports.

"I'm enjoying the car, it's nice to be with the world champion team and I feel very comfortable. I'm able to focus on my driving, I'm getting more experience, confidence. Obviously your team-mate’s the first guy you look at, I'm sure Seb won't be happy with his result, it's not going to make him not talk to me and I'm sure he'll just work harder, although I won't rest either, there's still three guys ahead of us [that] we need to beat."

Vettel was told to allow Ricciardo through and the German responded by saying that it was 'tough luck' that he was on a different strategy.

But Vettel claims that he consequently allowed his team-mate through.

"There was no point holding him back further, he was a lot quicker and I let him go," he said. "I started to realise more and more that I couldn’t hold him back. The first stint was alright but the last two on the primes I was too slow."
