Daniel Ricciardo is hopeful that the upgrade package which Red Bull is introducing for this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix will enable the squad to fight with Williams.

Red Bull has endured a challenging start to its 2015 campaign, with performance problems accentuated by reliability, but the Australian - victor of three races last year - is optimistic that the outfit's fortunes will change this weekend.

"We’ve got a few aerodynamic parts which should help us," he said. "These are things we’ve obviously tried to push through as quickly as possible. Having the time since Bahrain’s given us more time to get it on the car in the right way.

"Obviously everyone else has got some parts but we feel this is, let’s say, the biggest step we should make since Melbourne.

"I think it should give more downforce. It’s hard to quantify how much. The basic thing is more downforce, more grip on the front I guess.

"I don’t want to get too excited, I think this weekend has let’s say the potential to put us back in that fight, I think at least with Williams and get us closer to Ferrari."

Ricciardo also added that Renault's reliability issues so far this season means that the French company is not yet focusing on performance.

"I think for now the performance side is probably not going full steam ahead because of the reliability issues," he said.

"I think the main stuff we’re trying to resolve this weekend is reliability. Obviously with the fourth engine we want to try and get this as far as it can go.

"Let’s say that extra half a tenth of performance, I think we’re just going to put it aside until we’re 100% sure with what’s happening with reliability."
