Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo says the outfit did not expect to qualify on the front row of the grid in China, as he set the second fastest lap in Q3.
Ricciardo edged ahead of both Ferrari drivers during his final run in Q3 to qualify second to Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg.
It is the fourth time in his career that he will line-up from the front row of the grid as he equalled his best qualifying result.
"To be honest inqualifying I didn’t think we started in the best position in Q1," he said.
"Obviously it was a disrupted session, with the balance we didn’t seem like we’d be in a fight for the front few rows.
"In Q3 we found more speed, the Super Soft is tricky to manage to get one lap out of it, it’s not easy, it chewed up quite a bit.
"So [it was] just [a case of] understanding that as the session went on, and me understanding it, and my engineer making a few adjustments, second’s pretty awesome, we didn’t expect this!"
