Raikkonen takes thrilling Abu Dhabi win

By on Sunday, November 4, 2012

Kimi Raikkonen finally won a race in 2012 in a stunning Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Finn took advantage of a poor start from Mark Webber to leap up to second place at the start.

Raikkonen was losing ground to early leader Lewis Hamilton but the Brit retired on Lap 20 with a mechanical failure.

Fernando Alonso and, incredibly, Sebastian Vettel completed the podium.

In a crazy race, Nico Rosberg launched over the back of Narain Karthikeyan early on and a mistake by Sergio Perez eliminated Romain Grosjean and Mark Webber.

The heavy crash between Rosberg and Karthikeyan deployed the Safety Car early on, allowing Vettel to close in on the field.

However, during the caution period he ran into a DRS board when taking evasive action against Daniel Ricciardo and had to pit for a new front wing.

Raikkonen controlled proceedings up front while Vettel dropped to 4th when he made a second stop. Another safety car period for the crash involving Webber and Grosjean left Vettel within range of Button and he duly passed his McLaren rival with 5 laps to go.

In a fraught Grand Prix, Pastor Maldonado and Webber collided, leaving the Australian in a spin. While he recovered a position or two, Webber and Massa touched a few laps later, sending the Brazilian spinning.

There was also a collision at the start, leaving Nico Hulkenberg out of the race and Bruno Senna facing backwards.

Maldonado took fifth, ahead of Kamui Kobayashi, Massa, Senna, Paul di Resta and Daniel Ricciardo.

The result leaves Vettel ahead of Alonso by ten points.
