According to reputable sources, Kimi Raikkonen is close to signing a deal with Williams to return to F1 in 2012. It is understood the the Finn visited the Williams teams’ Oxfordshire factory recently with the intention of negotiating a deal to return with Williams.

One of the reasons why Raikkonen's interest in Williams was piqued was because of the hiring of former McLaren engineer Mike Coughlan, who designed the MP4-20, a fast but fragile car which nearly took Raikkonen to a F1 World Drivers' Championship in 2005.

It is likely that Rubens Barrichello will have to make way for Kimi Raikkonen in Williams, as Pastor Maldonado has his place in the team assured due to sponsor backing from his country, Venezuela, with state owned oil company PDVSA a long term backer. Williams is hoping that the presence of a F1 World Champion in their team will revitalize them and attract new sponsors to their team.
