Former Formula 1 driver Nelson Piquet Jr. became the first Formula E champion when the inaugural season of the electric racing series came to a close in London on Sunday.
Piquet Jr raced for Renault in 2008 and 2009 though his presence in the sport has been associated with the 'Crashgate' scandal in Singapore.
Piquet Jr. since spent time racing in America before joining Formula E, where he beat Sebastien Buemi to the crown by a single point after an 11 round season.
"The team did an amazing job, they worked really hard, once we got our first win in Long Beach we realised we had a chance of winning the championship," he said. "It’s been incredible.
"This has opened my career again. I was able to show my potential. At NEXTEV TCR we showed that if you put a good group of guys together you are able to fight against manufacturers, you just need to be smart."
