Sergio Perez says Force India could be in for a tough season and is pinning his hopes on a B-specification car, which is scheduled to make its debut in a couple of months' time.

Force India's VJM08 was delayed and only ran on the final three days of pre-season testing, leaving the squad behind its rivals in terms of development.

The team claimed seven points in Australia but left Malaysia empty-handed and is wary that the next part of the season is likely to be a challenge.

"If we can make a proper step then I think we can still have a good year, because there are plenty of races to go after that, so there's a lot of time to recover," Perez said ahead of this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai circuit.

"But if we don't make the step that we are hoping for then it's going to be a very painful year."

Perez also admitted that maintaining motivation is tricky when the squad is behind its rivals on-track.

"It's really hard to keep motivated going into a race knowing it's going to be a really hard race," he said.

"It's not the easiest position as a driver for you have to be be professional and you have to do the job as if you were going to win the race."
