Perez finished in ninth place in Hungary but believes he can build on that result.
“I’m confident that I can maximise the potential of the car,” he said.
“I will try and take 120% out of the car: that’s the target. I don’t know if a podium is realistic but we will see.”
In Hungary we spotted some mistakes and the car was not quite right. We had some issues but qualifying was good: positive signs and hopefully we can do better than the last weekend.”
Perez also dismissed suggestions that the modified tyre compounds assisted McLaren.
“No, it has nothing to do with that. Right now we are far behind because we don’t have enough downforce, not the tyres. [Nevertheless] I’m expecting to do much better than in the previous races.”
Perez hinted that McLaren’s best chance of a strong result could come in wet conditions.
“I think once we know where we are,” he said when asked whether rain would be preferable.
“Normally the rain is a good factor when you are not so competitive, so if that’s the case then definitely I want rain for both days as that can mess up the conditions more.”
