Force India driver Sergio Perez believes that a podium position would have been possible at the Austrian Grand Prix had he not sustained a grid penalty.

Perez qualified in 11th position but dropped to 16th as a result of his sanction for causing a collision with Felipe Massa in Canada.

Perez executed a two stop strategy by prolonging his first stint to lead the race, before eventually coming home in sixth place, setting the fastest lap during his final stint.

"Once again really we had the pace for the podium, very unfortunate with the penalty," Perez said.

"To come back from 16th to sixth it shows how strong we were, the pace was good in certain parts.

"[My] start on the prime was good and I got positions. Williams did a podium so we know we have to improve our car, but it’s a great result from where we started."

Perez believes that getting through on Jenson Button at the start was a key moment in his race.

"I positioned myself well for turn one, Jenson ran wide which was important for me as he was on a similar strategy. That was one of the key [moments] of the race."
