Nick Heidfeld set to return with Renault

By on Wednesday, February 9, 2011

Ex-BMW driver Nick Heidfeld is set to return to Formula One this year, in place of injured star Robert Kubica.

According to various sources, team principal Eric Bouiller informed 4th driver Romain Grosjean of his decision, but the announcement regarding Heidfeld will not be made prior to the third test in Barcelona next week.

But owner Gerard Lopez's words this afternoon has led some to suggest that 2007 world champion Kimi Raikkonen could be in line for a surprise return to the sport.

"If Robert won't return [in 2011] we rely on a driver with experience. A runner capable of winning the championship."

The only man with race winning credentials available currently is Raikkonen, but he is happy in the World Rally Championship.
