Mercedes has confirmed that it has opted to use its remaining seven engine tokens ahead of this weekend's Italian Grand Prix.
Due to a loophole in the 2015 regulations, engine manufacturers have been permitted to use the 32 tokens for upgrades across the course of the campaign, rather than solely during the pre-season testing period.
"Our drivers will take their third Power Units of the season and it will be a new spec using our remaining 7 development tokens," Mercedes confirmed via its Twitter account.
"We’ve tactically pulled forward planned 2016 development to learn about a new spec of Petronas f
uel out on track."
Mercedes has won nine of this season's 11 races and holds a 184 point advantage over Ferrari in the Constructors' championship.
