An upbeat Felipe Massa expressed positivity over Williams's progress after he qualified in sixth place for the Chinese Grand Prix.

Williams has struggled in the wet in 2014 but both drivers progressed through to Q3, with Massa in sixth ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

"[It's] surprising in a way yes but we also made some steps with the car, we have new pieces and it shows the car has good potential," Massa told Sky Sports.

"I’m happy with the qualifying today so I hope tomorrow we can have a good race, maybe the weather will be a bit different, hopefully get a good result and in the next race we can bring more improvements and see the potential."

Massa believes he can move up the field in tomorrow's race.

"Maybe we can fight for a better result than compared to what we had today," he said. "Red Bull is there, Mercedes is there, Ferrari is around so it won’t be easy but we need to fight."

Bottas echoed his team-mate's comments.

"I’m happy that we’ve obviously made progress in the wet," he said. "We’re expecting to fight for better positions than where we were today."
