Felipe Massa set the fastest time for Williams on the first day of the third in-season test at Silverstone.

Massa’s time of 1:35.242, which he set during the first half of running, was not beaten after lunch and remained the quickest time of the day.

Daniel Ricciardo did not set a time in the morning session but pumped in a late lap to go just 0.006s slower than Massa.

Championship leader Nico Rosberg was third quickest for Mercedes, 0.331s down on Massa.

Adrian Sutil put in a late quick lap to go fourth for Sauber, less than half a second slower than Massa.

Jules Bianchi was fifth for Marussia and completed over 100 laps as he conducted tyre testing for Pirelli, ahead of his run in the Ferrari F14T on Wednesday. The Frenchman's day came to an end an hour prematurely due to an engine fire.

Stoffel Vandoorne, who returned to the cockpit of the McLaren MP4-29, was sixth, ahead of Sergio Pérez.

Jean-Éric Vergne was eighth for Toro Rosso and had a difficult day.

Vergne caused three red flags across the duration of running as his STR9 stopped on track several times.

Pastor Maldonado set the ninth fastest time for Lotus.

Ferrari development driver Pedro De la Rosa, who received his first taste of the Ferrari F14T, was 10th. De la Rosa, who substituted for the resting Kimi Räikkönen, was conducting tyre testing for Pirelli.

Caterham academy youngster Will Stevens rounded out the runners.
