Felipe Massa expressed his happiness despite having to abort his final lap in qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Massa qualified in third place for his home race but had to abandon his last attempt after engine issues delayed his entry onto the track and left him mired in traffic.

"[It's] very emotional to be here in Brazil and have a competitive car, [to] start in the top three," he said.

"I didn’t use everything I could from the car as I had traffic and [a] problem in my car on the last lap, I left at the last moment with a lot of traffic around so I couldn’t improve my lap and everyone was improving a little."

Massa nonetheless acknowledged that beating either of the Mercedes drivers to pole position was a difficult task.

"I was not going to improve enough to beat them [Mercedes] but maybe to get close," he said.

"[It's] close between team-mates, them [Mercedes] and me and Valtteri [Bottas]."
