Felipe Massa hailed the progress made by his Williams team after he registered his first podium finish since last year's Spanish Grand Prix.

Massa started the race from fourth place but moved up to third at the expense of team-mate Valtteri Bottas, before passing Kevin Magnussen for second.

While Massa was ultimately demoted to third by eventual race winner Lewis Hamilton, the Brazilian driver expressed his happiness at finishing on the podium at the Italian Grand Prix.

"It’s a great day for us, great race, great start, also the pace was very good, not enough to fight the Mercedes but we had very good pace," he said.

"The team did a perfect job, really happy to be on the podium, we missed a bit during the season so it’s special to be on the podium there in front of amazing people.

"[It's] also a very positive result for us that we passed Ferrari here as well, which is very important for us. It’s amazing to see how Williams was last year and now we are fighting with big teams, it’s really good and we will keep fighting to the last race, hopefully we can get this third place in the championship."

Massa also rubbished suggestions that his third place finish would be a message to former employers Ferrari.

"It’s not a message, but we are fighting with Ferrari, we need to do everything we can to be in front of them," he said.

"I’m not driving for Ferrari anymore, even though they are always inside my heart, but now I am in another team and we need to fight everybody and be in front of everybody. Today we did a fantastic job and we are competitive, it is a message that we are there and fighting."
