Williams driver Felipe Massa set the quickest time on the first day of the final pre-season test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

Massa took the mantle from World Champion Lewis Hamilton during the afternoon session on Medium tyres and promptly lowered his quickest time to a 1:23.500 on the yellow-banded Soft tyres.

Massa’s time was significantly quicker than anyone achieved during last week’s test as he ended a day partially affected by rain significantly faster than Sauber's Marcus Ericsson.

The Swede moved up the table late on when he set a time on the Soft tyres and improved to second when he switched to the Super Soft tyres. He promptly improve his time later in the stint to get within eight tenths of Massa's time.

Hamilton ended the day in third place having sat out the afternoon session due to an MGU-K failure in his Mercedes W06 Hybrid. He set his time on Medium tyres during the early stages of the day.

Daniil Kvyat was fourth quickest for Red Bull and caused an early red flag when his car stopped at the pit exit.

Romain Grosjean was fifth quickest for Lotus, with Ferrari's Kimi Räikkönen in sixth.

Carlos Sainz Jr. trialled an extensively modified Toro Rosso – which included a tweaked front wing – and set the seventh best time, having stopped on track at Turn 10 in the afternoon session.

McLaren endured another challenging day as Jenson Button was able to complete only seven laps during the morning session, none of which were remotely competitive.

Button returned to the pits and shortly after lunch McLaren confirmed that a hydraulic leak required an engine change, ending the team’s running for the day.

Force India did not run as they prepare for the arrival of the new VJM08 on Friday, with a view to Nico Hülkenberg testing the car during the afternoon session.
