Pastor Maldonado has been reprimanded by the stewards after failing to adhere to the required procedure during qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Maldonado set the 17th quickest time during Q1 before stopping on track to avoid damaging his power unit.

The stewards deemed that 'the driver left the car without the steering wheel being in place'.

Maldonado was given just a reprimand - his first of 2014 - as the stewards decided that his Lotus E22 was not left in a dangerous place.

"We had a problem which meant that I was losing a lot of power on my last flying lap," said Maldonado.

"The engineers asked me to stop the car immediately which was a shame as I think we would have been in a position to compete in Q2.

"Anything can happen in the race so we'll see how it goes. It's a long race and not a particularly easy track so it will be important to complete a good first lap and recover some places. Of course we will do our best and hopefully enjoy tomorrow."
