Pastor Maldonado says he is optimistic over Lotus' potential after he enjoyed his first day of running in the squad's new E23 Hybrid.

Maldonado endured a difficult 2014 campaign as he scored just two points but after being unable to hit the circuit on Sunday, he gave the car its public debut on Monday morning at Jerez.

Maldonado racked up 41 laps to set the sixth quickest time before a drive train issue truncated his running.

"It was fantastic to get behind the wheel for the first ever lap of this exciting new car," he said.

"Even though it’s early days we achieved a lot today. It was already exciting to feel the potential of the car and I can’t wait to get back in the car tomorrow.

"We did stop running early, but then it started to rain so everyone else came in too so it was not a big drama. The car certainly looks fantastic and I know we have a lot of potential for the season ahead."

Maldonado will continue to pilot the E23 Hybrid on Tuesday before Romain Grosjean samples the car for the first time on Wednesday.
