Pastor Maldonado has been demoted five grid positions for colliding with Lewis Hamilton after the chequered flag in Q2. He will start 21st on the grid for the race.

Maldonado and Hamilton first made contact with each other in the final minutes of Q2 as Hamilton overtook the Williams driver during his flying lap. At the exit of Turn One, once Hamilton had taken the chequered flag, Maldonado appeared to side-swipe the McLaren driver. The incident left Hamilton with a damaged front wing but he managed to get back to the pits and have his front wing changed before the start of Q3.

Prior to the stewards decision however, Maldonado refused to accept blame for the crash. Maldonado would only say that "we need to understand more" why the incident happened.

Alternate replay angles of the incident also showed Hamilton making a move towards the Venezuelan rookie, and so the 2008 world champion received a formal reprimand but escaped without any further penalty.
