Kevin Magnussen says he is thrilled by finishing on the podium in his first Formula 1 race and thanked McLaren for their faith.

Magnussen started the race from fourth place but took advantage of a mechanical problems for Lewis Hamilton to move up into third place.

"It does feel incredible, crazy to think that we’re here," Magnussen told Sky Sports F1.

"Today I've done my first Formula 1 race and I got on the podium and I did it with McLaren – it’s a dream come true, it’s unreal."

"I'm so proud of the team for taking that risk – taking me in is a big risk as I'm a rookie but to believe in me and giving me this support and time that I need is so good.

"It’s a gamble to take a rookie, especially in a top team. Last year I went up to Martin [Whitmarsh] and said ‘I’m ready!’ and they listened. This has been the best day of my life – I'm sure there’s better days ahead!

Magnussen says that McLaren improved the balance of the MP4-29 vastly across the course of the weekend.

"The car was handling really well and we came him with a car that I didn’t really like and was not happy with the balance but we turned it around and made it a really good car; to do that in such a short time is good.

"I had a go at Daniel [Ricciardo] and tried my best but there’s so much to do, you miss it and then you have to save again but we’ll get on top of that. It would have been nice to get him, a win would have been amazing but not possible today and Im just thrilled with this."
