Kevin Magnussen has been handed a 20 second penalty after he forced Fernando Alonso off the track during the closing stages of the Belgian Grand Prix.

Magnussen and Alonso were embroiled in a furious scrap for fifth place at the end of the race, with Magnussen edging Alonso onto the grass along the Kemmel Straight.

'The driver of car 20 [Magnussen] was defending his position on the straight between turn 4 and 5, a significant portion of car 14 [Alonso] was alongside car 20,' read the stewards' report.

'The driver of car 20 did not leave enough space for car 14 and forced the car off track.'

Alonso subsequently dropped down to eighth (which now becomes seventh) after losing time behind Magnussen and slipping behind Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button.

As a result of his sanction, Magnussen has been demoted from sixth to 12th place, as well as copping two penalty points for the move.

Nico Hulkenberg inherits the final point for 10th place.
