Lotus deputy team principal Federico Gastaldi says the outfit is edging closer to a decision regarding its replacement for Haas-bound Romain Grosjean in 2016.

Pastor Maldonado will remain with Lotus for a third campaign but the identity of his team-mate remains uncertain, following Grosjean's decision to move to Formula 1's newest operation next year.

"The passing of time means that you always get closer to something in the future, so yes, we are closer to making an announcement," said Gastaldi.

"I would say something will come sooner rather than later.

"We won’t be disclosing who it is before we announce it, but we certainly have been speaking to drivers with good provenance and we have a pretty good idea who we will have in the car."

Lotus reserve driver Jolyon Palmer, who has participated in 10 practice sessions for the team in 2015, has been pushing for a promotion, though a decision may rest on whether Renault completes its takeover of the Enstone operation.
