Kamui Kobayashi says he is unsure whether he will be on the Formula 1 grid for his home round of the championship in Japan, in two weeks' time.

Kobayashi has raced for Caterham in 2014 but missed the Belgian Grand Prix after the squad opted to give Andre Lotterer his debut, while Kobayashi's presence in Italy and Singapore was only confirmed on the Wednesday prior to each event.

As well as Lotterer, Formula Renault 3.5 frontrunner Roberto Merhi has been in the frame, having tested for Caterham during practice in Italy.

The Japanese racer admits that he does not know whether he will be on the grid at Suzuka.

"It is just for one race, until they confirm," Kobayashi is quoted by Autosport.  "I hope [to be on the grid in Japan] but it's not confirmed yet. I'm just going to do my job this week and we will see.

"I should have a contract until the end of the year but in Fprmula 1, sometimes it doesn't work on contracts, which is not a surprise."

Kobayashi's best result in Formula 1 came at Suzuka in 2012 when he finished the race in third place, while driving for Sauber.
