Kamui Kobayashi set the fastest time in first practice for the Belgian Grand Prix.

The Japanese driver's time of 2:11.389 was the best in a session affected by heavy rain.

The 90 minute session began in wet conditions, with only Kobayashi setting a lap time. With around forty minutes remaining, following a period of intense rainfall, the drivers returned to the track.

There's no doubt that the heavy rain will be a source of frustration for the drivers after a five week break. The rain left Lotus unable to test their new Double DRS.

Les Combes was the corner that caught most drivers out, with both Sauber drivers taking to the run off to avoid an accident.

There were also moments for Michael Schumacher, Pastor Maldonado and Paul di Resta at Eau Rouge, although they all continued.

It was a troublesome end to the session for Felipe Massa, who stopped at the Bus Stop chicane with smoke pouring from his engine.
