Kamui Kobayashi has joked that he just wants the chance to race properly after he was knocked out during Q1 for the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Kobayashi set the 20th fastest time during a wet qualifying session after the Japanese driver encountered more car problems during the final practice session.

"Even with limited running we were still able to make a bit of progress, and with the data generated from my teammate’s car we were able to set the car up for qualifying, but obviously this isn’t how we are going to find out what the car is really capable of," he said of how Caterham's issues are affecting him.

"In qualifying we went out with the pack on Intermediates and as much as I was pushing I wasn’t able to get any more out of the car, especially as I couldn’t get the inters into their working range so never had them running properly.

"Bearing in mind the tiny number of laps we did all weekend, and the problems we had on Saturday morning, the fact we were even running in qualifying was down to the hard work the team put in, so to have got out there and put in laps after all the problems we’ve had is a small reward.

Kobayashi was eliminated from the Australian Grand Prix at the first corner but is hopeful of making the full distance in Malaysia.

"Now we focus on tomorrow and hope we can have a full race. If it rains like it did today anything could happen – I just want the chance to race properly!"
