Nico Hulkenberg set the fastest time on the first day of testing in Bahrain on another difficult day for reigning champions Red Bull.

Hulkenberg's time of 1:36.880 was almost a second quicker than Ferrari's Fernando Alonso - and faster than the best time achieved during last year's Bahrain Grand Prix.

Alonso caused the first red flag of the day when his Ferrari F14 T stopped early on in the session but the team quickly repaired any problems.

Lewis Hamilton was third for Mercedes, with McLaren's Kevin Magnussen in fourth.

Sebastian Vettel set the fifth fastest time for Red Bull but their problems persisted.

Red Bull arrived in Bahrain on the back of a difficult first test at Jerez, having completed only 21 laps at the Spanish circuit.

The RB10 did not leave the garage during the morning session but Vettel finally took the car out on track after lunch. Vettel's best time of 1.40.224 was over three seconds down on the best effort and came shortly before he stopped on track with smoke coming from the car, suggesting that overheating problems continue to plague the team.

Adrian Sutil was sixth fastest and spun at turn one during the morning session, triggering a red flag period.

Caterham have the whole day's running to reserve driver Robin Frijns and he racked up over a race distance in the CT05, by far the most of the Renault-powered outfits.

Felipe Massa's running was cut short by a fuel systems issue which left the Brazilian in the garage for much of the day.

It was a difficult day for Toro Rosso as Daniil Kvyat, who suffered from a lack of running at Jerez, only made it out onto the track late in the afternoon after an oil leak.

The Russian managed a handful of laps before he stopped on track.

Romain Grosjean gave the Lotus E22 its public debut during the morning session and completed seven laps.

Jules Bianchi completed just a few laps after Marussia spend most of the day in the garage due to an IT configuration problem.
