Lewis Hamilton reckons the Mercedes W04 is the best car he's driven in Formula 1.

Hamilton claimed pole position for Sunday's British Grand Prix and later said the car was the best he's had in the sport.

Nonetheless, the Brit is still not completely satisfied with his machine.

"Over time I'll steer it [the car] into a place that's better for me. For now I do the best with what I have which is fantastic really," he said.

"It's no secret I've struggled with braking but it's a step in the right direction this weekend."

Hamilton conceded that Red Bull will be difficult to beat in the race.

"The Red Bulls are hard to beat, I don't think we're there yet but we're getting closer. We'll see what we can do, do the best we can to keep them at bay."

Hamilton was also asked about McLaren's struggles and whether he had any indication that his former team would be uncompetitive this season.

"I didn't see their troubles coming. The car last year was fantastic so I assumed it would progress [into] this year so I was saying to myself that the car Sergio [Perez] will have is fantastic and he's going to be able to prove himself. It's a surprise for everyone but they're a great team and they'll bounce back, they'll always be a fighting force in Formula 1."

"I'm grateful to the team [Mercedes] for giving Nico [Rosberg] and me a great car, it's the best car I've had... period actually, I think it's the best car I've driven, [it's] not so easy to adapt to but it's the most competitive car I think I've ever driven."
