Lewis Hamilton admitted he was surprised by the pace of Mercedes's rivals during qualifying for the Singapore Grand Prix.

Hamilton claimed pole position for the race, ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg, but the pair were only a couple of tenths ahead of Red Bull duo Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel, with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Williams's Felipe Massa close behind.

"[It was] quite an exciting session, wasn’t expecting to see how close everyone was, good laps in Q1 and Q2," he said.

"Ferrari [was] very close, to end up the way it did is good for our team."

Hamilton locked up into the first corner on his final flying lap and was relieved to have managed to claw back time to beat Rosberg by seven-thousandths of a second.

[On the] last lap I locked up into turn one and lost a lot of time but managed to pull it back," he said.

"At that point I lost two tenths but I kept going and it got better and better throughout the lap

"I wasn’t trying to look at it too much andd there was so much happening, great effort by the team obviously to come here and have the performance we have is a fantastic performance by the team."
