Lewis Hamilton set the pace for Mercedes during the second practice session ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix but he was forced to stop trackside after reporting a problem with his W05 Hybrid.

The Brit's time of 1:34.508 was over two-tenths of a second faster than Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg.

But Hamilton stopped on the exit of The Loop with half an hour remaining, complaining of engine problems.

Behind the Mercedes duo, Fernando Alonso was third quickest, almost three-quarters of a second behind Hamilton.

Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel completed the top five for Red Bull.

Valtteri Bottas was sixth for Williams - despite some bodywork detaching itself from the FW36 - ahead of the McLaren pairing of Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen.

Kimi Raikkonen and Jean-Eric Vergne completed the top 10. The French driver's session ended prematurely when his right front wheel came loose and he was forced to stop by the side of the track.

Felipe Massa missed the first segment of the session as Williams repaired the damage to his car following his shunt in the first practice session and he ended in 11th.

Daniil Kvyat was 12th, ahead of Esteban Gutierrez and the Lotus duo of Pastor Maldonado and Romain Grosjean, who appeared to struggle with the handling of the E22, as the Frenchman ran through the gravel at Luffield.

Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg had a quiet day for Force India in 16th and 17th, ahead of Adrian Sutil.

Jules Bianchi was left in the garage for much of the session as Marussia repaired a battery problem but he recovered to set the 19th quickest time, ahead of Kamui Kobayashi, Max Chilton and Marcus Ericsson, who ended his session in the old pit lane after his Caterham developed an engine problem.
