Lewis Hamilton continued his strong form by setting the quickest time during the first free practice session ahead of this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Hamilton set a time of 1:27.023 late in the session to eclipse former team-mate Jenson Button by 0.868s.

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo was the only other driver to get within a second of Hamilton’s time as he edged out home favourite Fernando Alonso for third.

Nico Rosberg was fifth despite completing only nine laps early on in the session as Mercedes investigated an ERS cooling issue in his car.

Kimi Räikkönen set the sixth quickest time for Ferrari, while Kevin Magnussen, Pastor Maldonado, Sergio Perez and Felipe Massa rounded out the top 10.

Daniil Kvyat was the first driver to set a lap time and ended the session in 11th place, ahead of Nico Hülkenberg and Jean-Éric Vergne, who suffered a big lock-up under braking for the first corner.

GP2 driver Felipe Nasr tested the Williams FW36 in place of Valtteri Bottas and he ended up in 14th, ahead of Adrian Sutil in the lighter Sauber, Jules Bianchi and Romain Grosjean, who suffered a few off-track excursions.

Reserve Giedo van der Garde returned to the Sauber cockpit but encountered a brake failure down into the first corner. The Dutch racer did well to keep his C33 out of the barriers and he returned to the pits.

Sebastian Vettel’s Spanish Grand Prix weekend began badly when his RB10 stopped trackside during the opening part of the session due to a suspected electrical failure. He was unable to return to the circuit and ended the 90 minute session down in 20th place, ahead of only the Caterham drivers.
