World Champion Lewis Hamilton praised his Mercedes team and labelled the W06 Hybrid as the best car he's driven after he surged to pole position in Australia.

Hamilton beat team-mate Nico Rosberg by 0.594s, with Williams' Felipe Massa the fastest non-Mercedes driver, 1.3s behind the defending champion.

"It’s been a good day, Q1 didn’t start out too good but it got good at the end of it," Hamilton told reporters in Australia.

"When you approach the weekend you don’t know what to expect, once I came across the line it solidified my belief and where my mind currently is, and also just what an amazing job the team has done. 1.4s to the team behind…the guys should be so proud.

"Last year I thought the car was the best I’ve driven and now I think this is the best I’ve ever driven. It’s still going to be a challenge, I’ve got Nico behind and he’s going to be quick, every time he goes into the factory he’s been doing race runs all day long on the simulator so I’ve got to work hard!"

Rosberg acknowledged that Hamilton had done the better job in qualifying.

"Lewis was on impressive form, [he did an] awesome job, [he] nailed it all the time,! he said. "For me the speed was there but I didn’t get it together, [it] just wasn’t a great day for me today, but the car is unbelievable and a pleasure to drive, we’re leading the pack, second [place] I have to live with but it’s a long day tomorrow."
