Lewis Hamilton will start from pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix.

In an unpredictable session, the Brit finished on top for the third time this season, just ahead of Williams's Pastor Maldonado.

Fernando Alonso sent the home fans into a state of delirium by posting provisional pole as the flag fell, although he was eclipsed by firstly Maldonado and then Hamilton. Nevertheless, the revised F2012 will start from 3rd.

It was a disappointing day for Red Bull as they will only start 8th and 12th with Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, while Jenson Button was also a victim of Q2 and starts 11th.

Tyre saving was the main goal of qualifying, leading to a mixed up grid. Who wins tomorrow is anyone's guess.
