Lewis Hamilton set the quickest time for Mercedes during Friday’s second practice session ahead of this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Hamilton ended the day with a time of 1:16.118 to ensure he eclipsed Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg by 0.175s.

Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel had a quiet start to the session but set the third fastest time, albeit 0.455s down on Hamilton.

Kimi Räikkönen set the fourth quickest time for Ferrari although he didn’t enjoy a trouble free session as he spun exiting the hairpin. Practice one pace setter Fernando Alonso was fifth in the sister F14 T.

Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas ensured that Williams had a fairly positive day as they set the sixth and seventh quickest times respectively, while Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button were separated by just a few thousands as the Dane claimed eighth spot.

Jean-Éric Vergne was 10th for Toro Rosso, ahead of Lotus’s Romain Grosjean and the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo, who clipped the wall on the exit of turn seven but was able to continue.

Nico Hülkenberg ended the day a couple of tenths ahead of Force India team-mate Sergio Pérez in 13th, while Pastor Maldonado was 15th following some initial engine mapping issues with his Lotus E22.

Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutiérrez could muster only 16th and 17th for Sauber, while Max Chilton was 18th.

Daniil Kvyat was a lowly 19th for Toro Rosso after completing just nine laps and ending his session prematurely, while Kamui Kobayashi ended a distant 20th for Caterham.

Caterham’s woes continued as Marcus Ericsson pulled off the circuit half an hour into the session while Jules Bianchi completed only three laps as Marussia investigated a problem with his car.
