Lewis Hamilton says he prefers being the hunter as he chases down Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg’s championship lead at this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix.

Hamilton set the quickest time during second practice at the Red Bull Ring on Friday afternoon and says that having to close down Rosberg’s 22 point lead brings out the better side in him.

“I think pressure and hunting definitely brings out the better side,” he told Sky Sports News.

“When you’re in front you feel vulnerable. Any mistake you make you’re going to be caught up, whereas for me it’s the other way around.”

The Brit was upbeat about his progress at the Red Bull Ring following his first experience of the nine-turn circuit.

“Not bad, considering I’ve never driven here before,” he said. “Even after my first laps in FP1, I was feeling really comfortable. [I was] always finding time with new lines and different things. To be as quick as I was, it was a really good feeling.

“[But] I don’t actually think pole is going to be the most important thing, as there’s a long straight up to turn two. But I’d still like to get pole and that’s my goal.”
