Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time during the second free practice session ahead of this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix.

Hamilton set a couple of quick times during a qualifying simulation to post a 1:09.542s to end the 90 minute session over three-tenths of a second quicker than Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg.

Fernando Alonso was third quickest for Ferrari, albeit almost a second down on Hamilton, as he occasionally struggled with the handling of the F14T.

Williams continued their promising recent form with their two drivers separated by just 0.002s as they rounded out the top five, Valtteri Bottas ahead of Felipe Massa.

Sebastian Vettel was sixth for home team Red Bull, with Jenson Button – who enjoyed a spell at the time of the times early on – eventually ending up in seventh place.

Daniel Ricciardo had a lurid slide at the penultimate corner on his way to eighth place, while Kevin Magnussen and Jean-Éric Vergne rounded out the top 10.

Kimi Räikkönen ended the session in 11th place via a trip across the grass at turn nine, ahead of Daniil Kvyat, who had a moment at the last corner after dipping a wheel onto the grass upon entry

Sergio Pérez edged out compatriot Esteban Gutiérrez, with Pastor Maldonado and Adrian Sutil – who made a few errors early on - a little further back.

Nico Hülkenberg was a lowly 17th for Force India, ahead of Max Chilton and Romain Grosjean; the Frenchman complained of problems with his Lotus E22.

Jules Bianchi headed the Caterham pair – Kamui Kobayashi was 21st but spent a lot of time in the garage with brake issues while Marcus Ericsson rounded out the field after a couple of errors under braking for turn two.
