Lewis Hamilton edged out Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg by just 0.003s to top the second practice session for the United States Grand Prix.

Rosberg set a time of 1:39.088 to lead Hamilton by 0.053s after their low-fuel runs on Option tyres but Hamilton responded on his second flying lap to post a 1:39.085.

However, Hamilton’s session ended 15 minutes prematurely with his Mercedes W05 Hybrid in the garage. Both Mercedes drivers had complained of gearbox problems while beginning their race simulations.

Fernando Alonso was third quickest for Ferrari, albeit over a second behind Hamilton’s time. Daniel Ricciardo recovered from missing most of the first practice session to end the day in fourth.

Felipe Massa posted the fifth fastest time for Williams, ahead of Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen and Toro Rosso youngster Daniil Kvyat.

Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button headed the times during initial early running on the Prime tyres but slipped back after the Option runs and ended in eighth and ninth place respectively.

Force India driver Nico Hülkenberg rounded out the top 10.

Valtteri Bottas returned to his Williams FW36 after sitting out the first session in favour of reserve driver Felipe Nasr and placed 11th while Romain Grosjean was 12th despite a high-speed spin through the Esses.

Jean-Éric Vergne also received his first taste of the circuit after Max Verstappen was given an outing in the first session and he finished in 13th place, ahead of Force India’s Sergio Pérez.

Pastor Maldonado was 15th after a spin at the exit of Turn 19, while Sauber duo Adrian Sutil and Esteban Gutiérrez were 16th and 17th.

Reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel was five seconds off the pace as he opted not to conduct a qualifying simulation, with the German set to start from the pit lane as a result of using his sixth Power Unit this season.
