Lewis Hamilton believes it’s crazy that former team mate Heikki Kovalainen will not race in Formula One this season.
Kovalainen raced alongside Hamilton in 2008-9 before moving to Lotus in 2010.
However, Caterham will field Charles Pic and Giedo van der Garde this year, leaving Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov out of a drive.
“Some other people that now have seats, I think that whoever gave them the seat are crazy to think that they’re better than Heikki,” he said.
“I think Heikki’s got great calibre, great experience and deserves to be here.”
“He’s a good friend of mine and I wish him all the best in whatever he’s doing,” he said.
Kovalainen claimed victory in the 2008 Hungarian Grand Prix and took a further three podiums for McLaren and Renault.
