Lewis Hamilton apologised to his Mercedes team after a sub-par showing during qualifying for the European Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit.
Hamilton topped all three practice sessions but had off-track excursions in both Q1 and Q2, before scuppering his first Q3 effort with an off at Turn 15.
Hamilton tried to recover but clipped the wall on the inside of Turn 10 and caused terminal damage to the front-right of his W07 Hybrid and had to park by the side of the circuit.
Hamilton will consequently line up from 10th position on the grid, with Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg on pole position.
"Not too much [to say], I just wasn’t on it today," Hamilton said when asked to explain his troublesome session.
"It’s a fine line between being on it and not being on it, today was just one of those days, don’t have an answer for it, will try and make up for it tomorrow.
"It’s always difficult but I’ll give it my best shot, the other times [qualifying problems] were not my fault but today was my fault, apologies for the team and I’ll try and make up for it tomorrow."
