Esteban Gutierrez says that Sauber cannot afford to regret their disappointing result at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Sauber was on course for points until Gutierrez made a mistake at La Rascasse and caused terminal damage to his C33.

"I was actually maybe focusing too much on the details as I knew I had some very strong cars behind me," he said. "Everything was going perfectly. I was focusing on a bit of understeer in the car…it was one of the most painful mistakes of my career because of the position that we were in. It's painful as it’s a missed opportunity for everyone but it cannot hold us back."

The Mexican racer says he is encouraged by Sauber's performance across the race in Monaco.

"In the race we were better than expected, we were trying to hold the positions and Kimi [Raikkonen] was not able to close very much on me – I was able to keep on the Williams during the race so that’s something and obviously requires zero mistakes, but then one came up and it was a big one," he said.

"But we cannot hold back – the car is improving step by step in terms of driveability and Ferrari is [improving] as well, this is something we have to use.

"We need it [the improvements] here as in Montreal we have long straights – it has to come and that’s where we’re going to use it fully."
