Romain Grosjean topped a dramatic final day of the second pre-season test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, as Fernando Alonso was airlifted to hospital.

Alonso’s McLaren hit the wall on the inside of Turn 3 and after being transported to the circuit’s Medical Centre by ambulance he was transferred by helicopter to hospital.

After an anxious wait McLaren confirmed to the gathered press that Alonso had undertaken a CT scan and that he was ‘uninjured and fine’.

Grosjean’s best time of the day came during the afternoon session on his only day in the Lotus E23 Hybrid this week.

Having moved to the top of the table on the Soft tyres, he sliced into his own advantage and posted a new quickest time on the Super Soft compounds.

Grosjean ended the day a few tenths clear of Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg, whose best time came on the Medium compound tyre.

Rosberg spun into the gravel after half an hour of running but was able to return to the track quickly.

Daniil Kvyat ended the day in third place for Red Bull.

Felipe Nasr was fourth, despite spending much of the morning in the garage due to technical problems. He then stopped on track during the final moments of the session.

Valtteri Bottas focused on long runs in the Williams FW37 and ended the day in fifth place, despite stopping on track during the afternoon session.

Carlos Sainz Jr. spent time at the head of the pack after setting the pace on Soft tyres – before improving slightly on the Super Soft compound – but his afternoon running was blighted by a crash at Turn 3.

Sebastian Vettel had a quiet day in the Ferrari SF15-T and ended in seventh place, having completed minimal running in the afternoon session.

Nico Hülkenberg as his first taste of action this year in the 2014 Force India but his day came to an early end when the car came to a smoky halt at the outside of Turn 1.

The final pre-season test of the year begins at the circuit on Thursday.
