Sergio Perez's build-up to this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix was hit by a gearbox problem in second practice, restricting the Mexican to just eighth laps in the 90 minute session.

Perez was unable to take the circuit during the first hour of running as Force India repaired an electronics control problem relating to the gearbox.

Perez ended the session in 15th place but missed out on much of the track action.

"It was quite a difficult day because we lost a lot of track time this afternoon," he said.

"It meant we could only do a short run on each tyre compound and I missed out on the high fuel running. Of course, if it rains on Sunday, missing out on this running won’t really matter, but we have to see what happens with the weather.

"My initial feeling was good on the hard tyre but we still need to work out the right compromise to get the most from the medium tyre."
