Robin Frijns has parted company with Caterham after his contract with the outfit expired on Monday.

Frijns, the 2012 Formula Renault 3.5 Series champion, joined Caterham at the start of the year after spending 2013 in a reserve role with Sauber.

Frijns participated in pre-season testing and received practice outings in Bahrain and Britain, but his role with the team was cast into doubt when the team entered administration.

"I’d like to say thank you and goodbye to all the people at Caterham F1 Team, whom I have worked with over the past 12 months," he said.

"I keep my fingers crossed that there will be a future for the team in Formula One in 2015 and beyond. Especially I’d like to thank former team principal Cyril Abiteboul whom I consider to be mainly responsible for giving me the chance to become a part of the team."

Frijns' management added that they were disappointed in the manner in which his year with Caterham progressed and that "we now have to focus on creating a better situation for next year."
